The Games I Played in 2025
Another year and some more games have been played. Like every year, this is not really an exhaustive list; it's just the best I could do with the games I remember playing. I pick up and play a lot of games, but not every single one stays in my memory.
Please find below my list of games with a small review or commentary. Some of the games were good, some were great, many were not to my taste. It's okay if I didn't like a game, because someone out there loved it; it just wasn't for me. As always, I have marked games that I completed or completed to the best of my ability with a *** at the end of the commentary.
At the bottom of the list, please find my honourable mentions, which contains games that don't meet the strict criteria for inclusion on this list. The criteria are as follows:
The games on this list must have been released in 2025 or were rereleased in 2025
I have to remember playing the game
That's it. I enjoy writing this list every year. Maybe you enjoy reading it every year, or maybe this is the first or last time you'll ever read it. No matter which reader you are, thanks for looking at my list.
Happy gaming to all in 2026!
The List
The Roottrees Are Dead – A bunch of people have died. You play as a family tree researcher trying to discover who their relations might be. Not at all grim, but definitely a challenging puzzle.
Tomb Raider 4–6 Remastered – I’ve barely touched this collection. These aren’t my favourite Tomb Raiders, but I have a soft spot for the coolest video game heroine of my youth. Best low-poly shooting at wolves and bats of the year.
Avowed – I was not bowled over by this game. It’s a bold choice to give your protagonist a head covered in fungus. I’m sure it’s a good game, but it felt kind of tedious and uninteresting to me. I want to like it, so maybe I’ll go back to it at some point.
Wanderstop – Need to put more time into this lovely game about slowing down, moving on, and dealing with deep trauma. Wonderful soundtrack and visual design.
Atomfall – Kind of Fallout crossed with Deus Ex in a retro future apocalyptic UK? It’s a bit like Avowed in that it’s a game that feels like a competent but uninspired entrant into a very well-trodden space. I’m sure it’s good, but it didn’t hold my attention. The location idea was neat?
Blue Prince – An absolutely fascinating puzzle game. Deeply and meticulously designed, the attention to detail is fabulous. The random elements will put some people off, and eventually it did for me too. But the notebook I have full of notes and observations is a testament to the quality of the game. Best reminder that home ownership is an untenable dream game of the year. ***
Rift Riff – You’re a little guy with a cloak. Some sort of creatures want to attack you. You run around and build towers to protect you and the land. It’s a hoot.
Super Fantasy Kingdom – Run a little kingdom while your heroes constantly try to defend the gates. You’d think I’d like this type of game, but it never clicked.
Q-UP – Hardcore coin flipping game. It’s odd and sort of fun, but I didn’t really dig it. However, the team includes people who made Universal Paperclips, so they deserve my time.
The King Is Watching – Another sort of idle game where you build a little kingdom and protect it from endless waves of creatures. It’s okay.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Folks really liked this game where you play as a bunch of really sad French people facing imminent death. I think it’s a pretty good game, but seemingly less so than most others. Watch out for the killer mimes.
Doom: The Dark Ages – Doom is a simple game of walking around and blasting villains. This is the best version of Doom ever. Approachable but mechanically deep, gorgeous with hardware-pushing graphics. Also, there’s a gun that chews up skulls and spits them out. Neat! ***
Shovel Knight Dig – Shovel Knight is an interesting character. This is that character in a game that is not that interesting.
Tower Wizard – A retro make-numbers-big game. You create a giant tower that breaks through the heavens. The numbers got very big and the game was good. ***
Mario Kart World – I’ve been driving Mario Kart since I was a child. This continues that trend. It’s a good game! Drive fast and live free. ***
FBC: Firebreak – Hooo boy. A co-op FPS shooter set in the Control universe is a really good idea. This is not a great game. It’s hard to pinpoint what’s so wrong with this game, but it’s not a compelling experience.
Donkey Kong Bananza – Donkey Kong smashes through everything because he’s so strong. This is the one-sentence pitch for an awesome game. Pauline sings, you smash. Great stuff. ***
Heretic + Hexen – A wonderful package of two classic shooters from the 90s. Pew pew pew! A sorcerer FPS!
The Rogue Prince of Persia – You are the Prince of Persia. You are in an entirely acceptable game. You do the sort of things you’d expect, and it’s more or less fun.
Kill the Brickman – I bought into the hype and this game has very little juice. The characters look gross, and that’s the thing I enjoyed the most. Not for me.
Baby Steps – You play as Nathan, a sort of arrested development figure. You wear pyjamas and literally struggle to walk. The core mechanic of the game is walking. It’s a hard game that absolutely feels punishing. It’s absurd and yet tells a sweet and interesting story. This game is a must-play and easily my favourite game of 2025. ***
Blippo – It’s kind of a TV watching simulator. Weird and strange, but enjoyable?
And Roger – The less you know about this game the better. It’s sweet, scary, sad, and hopeful. I knew where it was all going, but it remained deeply affecting. Stupendous game. ***
Hades 2 – It’s out! I haven’t played much more of it since it had its full release, but it’s so good. Play this game. It should’ve won all the art direction and music game awards. You play as the Princess of the underworld and you are literally fighting to kill Time itself! This is cool! Play this game! ***
Silent Hill f – Why do I buy games that are so scary? I’m sure this game is great, but I’ll probably never know how great because I’ll be too scared to find out. If you like wandering around a frightening Japanese village while grotesque things try to kill you, this is the game for you.
Battlefield REDSEC – Military shooter guy is back. Everyone’s favourite character from the military shooter franchise. This is a fun game, but we can be real about what it is.
Ball x Pit – I have played more hours of this game than anything else this year. You shoot balls at creatures in a pit. You pick up crystals that let you craft more and different balls and then also throw these at monsters. You do this until you get all the monsters. Then you go to the surface and maybe farm or something and then repeat the process. Wildly entertaining and satisfying. ***
Simogo Legacy Collection – Mobile games used to be the most amazing canvas for interesting and new approaches. Simogo took that to the next level with their superb designs.
9 Kings – You’re a king and you place your troops on a little grid and watch your forces smash into endless forces of other kings. It’s kind of a card game? It was fun! ***
A Game About Digging a Hole – You dig a hole in your backyard. That’s the whole concept. Very good game. ***
Blood: Refreshed Supply – Blood is one of those games that could only really be made at the time. It’s kind of a Doom clone where you are a cultist that fights other cultists. It’s not exactly Duke 3D, but it’s good.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – You are Samus Aran, the galaxy’s coolest bounty hunter. Samus is cool, she’s an icon. Samus has seen some stuff in her day, but she was never prepared for a bunch of goofy characters she’d meet on this adventure. Yikes, the story component of MP4:B is a huge misfire. Gameplay-wise things are fine and feel good enough. ***
Absolum – Hand-drawn, rogue-lite, beat ’em up brawler. It probably shouldn’t work, but it absolutely does. One of the best games of the year in an admittedly niche genre. Amazing artwork worth checking out even if you have no interest.
Ghost of Yotei – A sort of Kill Bill-inspired sort of sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. You play as Atsu, whose single-minded focus is to hunt down the group that destroyed her home over a decade ago. Sucker Punch is an amazing studio, and they have massively delivered with this absolutely beautiful game. Also of note, sometimes a wolf jumps out and bites your enemies. Neat!
Final Fantasy Tactics Ivalice Chronicles – The story of a misremembered history that captures class struggle, uprisings, and the fragility of human ego. Hard to believe this game came out almost 30 years ago. I was bowled over by the story then, and it’s possibly even more relevant now.
Megabonk – Vampire Survivors but 3D. You play as a cast of weird characters who just endlessly shoot things at creatures. Eventually the screen is full of explosions. You’ll probably die, but maybe you’ll win. Great game! ***
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound – I think that sometimes people forget that old games were good on their own merits. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound did not forget this. It is a great game that polishes and plays with its 2D heritage in a delightful way. You run around and hack and slash at baddies with divine precision. There’s some sort of story going on with demons and whatnot but it’s not really the point. The art is gorgeous, the gameplay is refined, and the music is engaging.
Honourable Mentions
Uncharted 4 – I beat this game when it first came out, but replayed it on the PC. Naughty Dog is a first-rate studio and this game absolutely still hits. Like playing an action movie. ***
Hollow Knight – Still a fun game, but it’s almost too long for me. I started playing it from the beginning again, and it has the juice. One day I’ll beat it.
Cyberpunk 2077 – I waited years to play this game, fully patched and ready to go. It’s a fun game that doesn’t reach the heights of Deus Ex, but it is thoroughly enjoyable. One major nitpick: it drives me crazy that the protagonist uses the same sitting animation with every clothing option. For a game so detailed, this feels like a weird oversight.
Spider-Man 2 – More Spider-Man. It’s good, but the joy of the first two entries isn’t quite hitting me. This is, for me, the best version of Spider-Man I’ve known, but our obsession with long games makes this journey feel stretched out. Also, when is the next Spider-Verse movie coming out?
Star Wars Outlaws – My impression from one hour of gameplay is that this game is fine. Maybe it’ll be better than fine!
Outer Wilds & Echo of the Eye – I finally cleared these games after years of being near the very end. Basically perfect puzzle games that have heart, adventure, and mystery at their core. Best experiencing-the-end-of-the-universe game ever. ***
Final Fantasy 1–4 – I wanted to finally beat all the old Final Fantasy games. I’ve kind of hit a wall on 5, but these games are largely great and very enjoyable. ***
Lords of the Fallen – It’s kind of a Souls game. You can warp between a dark fantasy world and a horrifying dark fantasy world. It’s not the best, but it’s certainly not the worst.
Elden Ring – I absolutely am bad at this game and I don’t have the patience to get good. Die over and over again while you attempt to get good at memorizing patterns. I’m glad other people love this game, but it’s not for me.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) – Bang bang, shoot shoot. This sort of remake of CoD:MW has a pretty fun campaign. Mindless and exciting with highly scripted set-piece moments. I didn’t play it in 2019, but it’s fun! ***
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022) – More bang bang, more shoot shoot. This sort of remake of CoD:MW2 has a pretty fun campaign. Mindless and exciting with highly scripted set-piece moments. I didn’t play it in 2022, but it’s fun! ***
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – Ever more bang bang, shoot shoot, but in space. Almost a decade old now, this is yet another CoD game I hadn’t played. It’s fine, I guess, but it really didn’t hit like some of the better CoD games. The novelty of being in space never felt utilized in exciting ways and the campaign felt a bit boring and disjointed. It’s fine, but you probably won’t come back to this one. ***
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – This game is an all-time great. Leap around, do flips, and literally control the flow of time. This is a game series that deserves so much better today.
Overwatch 2 – I still play it every day. Haters gonna hate, but it’s still a sublime FPS.
Fortnite – Shhhhhhh, don’t tell people but Fortnite is kind of good. Harmonix made the music mode, and it’s a great free rhythm game. The BR shooter mode is fine too. It’s not something I want to play every single day, but it’s fun.
